The son of a previous owner of the house tells police it was a souvenir he took home as a student at the University of Maryland's medical school more than 50 years ago.Hopefully this asshat never practiced medicine.

Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, I think that medical students actually had a reputation for being fond of gruesome pranks. I'm not sure if this continued up until the mid-20th century, but there was a time when something like this would not have been considered very unusual.
