NASA finds Martians

Martians exist(ed). They're also (well, were) bacteria.
Close examination suggested that about 25 percent of the crystal structures were chemically consistent with being formed from bacteria.

"We feel vindicated. We’ve shown the alternate explanation is absolutely incorrect, leading us back to our original position that these structures are formed by bacteria on Mars," Dr Mackay said.

Dennis Bazylinski, an astrobiologist from the University of Nevada who peer-reviewed the findings, said: "Until now I was on the fence but this paper has really thrown out the non-biological explanation."
So at some point, there was life on Mars. The question one must ask now is ... is it still there?

I'm kind of suprised that Fox News even reported this as it might chap the ass of decent segment of their viewership!

super cool!

GR's comment made me :)

I must say that I'm a little shocked at how many news stories you pull from Fox :)

GR,
Well said! Of course, if there is life elsewhere, it offers Fox a chance to garner new viewers, who may be proselytized about the ways of neoconservative economic and social theory!

Fascinating - although, as they say, this isn't really a "smoking gun". I doubt that we'll really be sure whether there was or is microscopic life on mars until we explore the planet more extensively.

I think FOX gets a bad rap. On your average day, when I'm looking at the news quickly, I scan three websites: CNN, FOXNews, and MSNBC. When I have more time, I'll also check out the AP, BBC, and Reuters websites.

Anecdotally speaking, all the three sites I regularly check have the same content. However, FOXNews seems to break stories quicker, and have more interesting front page items. For instance, on the Mars life article, they had it on the front page ... CNN and MSNBC didn't. That's why I go to FOXNews fairly often.

Plus, with the website, I'm not sure how much they cater to the fundamentalist/conservative. Their FOX Sexpert,Yvonne Fulbright, is always on the front page in the Features and Faces section.

Even if Obama doesn't, I do consider FOX a reliable news source. :)

True, alas I'm not sure that will ever happen. At least not anytime soon. :(

Of course, I will say this ... if NASA does plan on going soon, and needs a microbiologist ... I'll happily volunteer.

This story got my inner-nerd all kinds of excited.
