The Olympics are this year?!?!

I usually get excited for the Olympics. This year ... meh. There just doesn't seem to be a compelling storyline for me to latch onto to make me care enough to want to watch.

It kind of makes you miss the Soviet Union, at least then there was some good drama and competition.

I'm rather more excited, for geographically obvious reasons!

Cath,

I certainly don't blame you. It's a pretty legitimate reason! :) I think I've put my finger on why the Olympics just don't excite me any longer ... professional athletes. There will never be another "miracle on ice" for America like there was in 1980 when a bunch of American kids beat the USSR in the semi-finals and went on to win the gold.

I see these pro's all the time, and so watching them in the Olympics is just "more of the same". Bleh.

Same goes for the summer Olympics and men's basketball. Baseball was a bit different because that's a sport I love to watch no matter the level though they've now been dropped from the 2012 Olympics (thanks for nothing London!)

See, that's how most Canadian sports fans feel about hockey! (It's all about the hockey, really).

What I really love about the Olympics - winter and summer - is watching sports that I don't usually follow. I love watching the skiing especially!

With the baseball - I guess there just weren't enough countries playing, or something. It's not actually the host city's decision though, it's the IOC's (there was a controversy here about female ski jumpers trying to sue the local organising committee for being excluded, and the judge saying the decision wasn't under Vancouver's jurisdiction), so the fact that rugby sevens is in and baseball is out is not a UK vs US culture war! :)

I've been steadily losing interest in the Olympics with each set of games. I really don't know why or what happened. I used to love them when I was a kid, but now I can take it or leave it.
I might feel differently if it were being hosted in my home city though.
