So close, but yet ...

... so far. For the first 28 minutes of the game last night I thought it looked like the Jets could be going to the Super Bowl for the first time in my life. Then Peyton Manning found Austin Collie* not once but twice, the last time in the back of the end zone for six, and things started to fall apart at the seams. Manning, Garcon, and Collie abused everyone in the Jets secondary not named Darelle Revis ... in particular Lowery and Sheppard. It's obvious where the Jets need to focus this offseason.

With that said, I don't think anyone (except maybe Rex Ryan) thought the Jets would make it this far this year. There are high hopes for next year though.

Congratulations on the win Indy. A friend asked me how many scores I thought you guys could muster and the Jets stll get the win, and I said two. Well, I would have been correct if that had happened, but it didn't. You definitely outplayed us and you deserve that berth. Now I hope you get stomped by New Orleans.

Time to back up the smack ...

The Jets have to get to Tom Brady today, rattle his cage, force a couple of turn-overs and put up enough points to survive the eventual 4th quarter heroics. My sister (also a die hard Jets fan) is not very optimistic about the Jets' chances today, and given their history it's probably warranted. However, I have hope today. Saw last weeks game, read all the news, and it seems that they have a new attitude this year. A winning attitude.

We'll see if my faith in them is justified in under an hour.

I know it was only the ...

... Houston Texans we were playing, but man, oh man! We have a quarterback! Never had anything against Chad Pennington, he was a great QB but he was often injured and his lack of arm strength meant defenses didn't have to worry about the Jets going over the top on them. That's definitely not the case with Mark Sanchez, and as much as I can't stand USC, he's the man in NY and I'm happy about it!

Next week will be start of the true tests. We have the Patsies at home with a healthy Tom Brady throwing to Randy Moss. Hopefully Ryans defensive schemes keep the Patsies on their heels and the Jets can eke out a win. After that, it doesn't get much easier with the Jets playing the team that stole their old name.

Since my college football team ...

... is currently on life support, would it be crass to mention that tonight starts the NFL season?

The NFL Draft

So the Jets drafted Mark Sanchez in the 1st round (trading away essentially no one of note) and then picked up Shonn Greene in the 3rd round. They're set for at least the next year or so with Thomas Jones at RB*, but I wonder if this means we'll see a two back setup like the one that the Carolina Panthers employ. I also wonder what this means for Leon Washington.


*Of course now I'm reading that he's not exactly happy with his contract situation.


On a side note, Oliver Perez (SP for the NY Mets) sucks. We paid how much for this guy this offseason? I'd like to note that we could have had Derek Lowe for about the same price, and Lowe is currently 2-1 with a 3.10 ERA while Perez is currently 1-1 with a 8.50 ERA. Oh, and Jerry Manuel says the Mets pitching must improve. Yah well, Jerry ... that's like saying a bunch of illiterate individuals better start reading more proficiently. They can't do it better until they start doing it in the first place! Aside from Santana, the Mets have NO. STARTING. PITCHING.

Ok, now I'm a Jets fan who is as die-hard as the rest of them but ... Nugent is a kicker. KICKER. Yes, he's a pretty decent kicker, but the next kicker in the 2005 draft was taken with the 202nd pick (Nugent was taken with the 47th). He's no Vinatieri, even though he has an 81.5% FG PCT (Vinatieri's at 82.4% over a career 3 times as long), and has fairly decent range (54 yds is his long, Vinatieri's is 57). But still, he's a KICKER. Oh, and Vinatieri wasn't even drafted. He's not a QB, a RB, or any of the other countless positions with which you'd draft high, and to imply he's one of the Jets superstars ... stupid.

Not sure if I'm quite sold on the whole Brett Favre deal, but we're 1-0 and we play New England without Mr. Metrosexual (aka Tom Brady) next week. If we come out of that game 2-0, I'll be officially excited. For now, all we've done is beat Miami, a team with totally sucks. The other good news is ... since I hate the Patsies so damn much, I didn't have Brady on my "to draft" list. Instead, I drafted Brian Westbrook in the 1st round, and picked up Tony Romo in the 2nd. Probably took Romo too early, but we'll see. Both played well for me this weekend, but I still lost. I hate it when I put up a score good enough to beat 10 of the 12 teams in the league but I'm stuck playing the guy who had the highest score that week, netting me a L. Phooey.
