Smart Cookie

This post isn't as much a rag on Tim Tebow, as it is a brag on Sam Bradford.
According to The Palm Beach Post, Tebow scored a 22 (out of 50) on the Wonderlic test, supposedly a barometer for intelligence. The average for NFL QBs is 24, though expected starters in 2010 averaged out close to 28.5. The last seven Super Bowl winners? They come in at 30.1
Bradford? A 36.

Well one thing is certain ...

... Oklahoma will go bowling this season. They romped Texass A&M. Next is Tortilla Tech, then OSWho? in Stoolwater.

Sooners Go Boom ... Errr

What a disappointing year. It's hard to get upset with the Huskers though ... they're a classy fan base and program.

It's only after Oklahoma drops three games ...

... in it's first six that they get some media lovin. Of course, I'm not going to complain, and it's an interesting point. However Oklahoma should have won all three of those games, and if we did, we'd be right there for the BCS Championship. Problem is, our offensive line stinks and is undisciplined. If they could keep their blocking assignments and their composure, Bradford would have two functional arms and OU would most likely be 6-0.

It's going to be a long rest of the year ...

OU: 13
BYU: 14

To say that the offensive line didn't come to play would be an understatement. Their ineptitude meant that Bradford and then his backup Landry Jones, who I think everyone in Sooner Nation prayed would not hear his number called this season, spent a whole lot of time looking up at the new Dallas Jumbotron from their backs. Supposedly Bradford is out 2 to 4 weeks, which is 2 to 4 weeks too many. Fortunately we have the Idaho State Bengals next week, which just lost 50-3 to Arizona State. However, after that OU plays Tulsa with their high-powered offense, followed by a bye week, and then Miami, in Miami. After that, conference play starts with Baylor. To think that OU could finish up that stretch, before heading into the Red River Rivalry at 2-3 (or even worse 1-4) is something I don't even want to think about, but is entirely possible. Add to that the fact that OU's best offensive threat, Jermaine Gresham is out for an unknown length of time with torn cartilage in his knee, and things start looking grim. Another 12 penalty for 93 yards game won't help matters either.

Heading down the homestretch ...

... my tenure packet is due to reviewers on the 7th. That means that, since the 7th is a holiday, I really need to get it turned in by the 4th. That is the same day I have an invited presentation to a state agency. So, I'm going to be super busy again. I'll probably resume full-fledged blogging next week.

The only thing I have left to say is: Boomer Sooner!

I fully expect a total thrashing of BYU at the hands of Oklahoma this weekend.

With Oklahoma getting destroyed at the half ...

... against the Tar Holes, this report doesn't bode well for me.
"The emotional stress of loss and/or the intensity of a game played in a high profile rivalry such as the Super Bowl can trigger total and cardiovascular deaths," said Dr. Robert Kloner, a professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, who presented the study at the American College of Cardiology scientific meeting in Orlando.
I can certainly say that Oklahoma is certainly trying its best to give me a heart attack right about now.

Boomer Sooner!

The University of Oklahoma football team travels to Stoolwater this weekend to face their in-state "rival" OSWho? Typically only the OSU fans consider this "The Big Game" because to OU, the Cowboys are usually just a bunch of fumbling fools. However, this year OSU is ranked 12th, and OU trails Texass by .084 points in the BCS rankings. So, even for OU this ranks as a "Big Game". Beat OSU, hopefully handily, and OU stands to jump ahead in the BCS standings ... thereby earning themselves a trip to the Big 12 Championship to play Missouri. Beat Mizzou (which we did last year) and it's time to play for the National Championship!

I know, OU lost to Texass earlier this year. Doesn't matter. Strength of schedule, peaking at the right time, number of quality opponents ... they all favor Oklahoma. Boomer friggin Sooner!

Panties In A Wad Alert!

Drama reigns supreme here! And I quote:
That is simply insane. It's a declaration that religion trumps everything, and gives students an escape hatch from learning — biology class would become an exercise in futility, in which lazy, stupid, or religiously indoctrinated students would simply parrot the book of genesis at their instructors, and expect to be given a good grade.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevail here, here, and here. And of course, as of this moment, they're being ignored. Instead, the masses allow themselves to be whipped into a frenzy over basically a non-issue.

What do I think about the issue? I think Rep. Kern should find something more important to do, but that's the way it is with state politics. The only thing Oklahoma has been able to do in the last several years, as a state legislature, AFAIK is institute a tax on the poor (i.e., lottery). Oklahoma has been renowned for their corruption and incompetence at the state level, which is probably why they can't get big business into the state. As a consequence, they rank in the bottom 10 in every category of note. And yes, I spent several years in Oklahoma, attending graduate school, so I know what I'm talking about. I think this bit of legislature is stupid, and I think Rep. Kern is stupid for continually trying to push it through. I think it'll get shot down again.

The other unfortunate effect is that I think it paints theists in a bad light, as if they're all quacks. They're not. I don't think this issue rises to the level of needing to get your knickers in a twist, like a lot of people want. Maybe they miss the days of their youth where they got picked on as kids and received wedgies from the "cool kids", only now they get to rant and rave and "do something about it". I don't know.
